(series review) - Loki: Season 2

Phase Four of the MCU does not seem to make much sense, nor does it gel well with the other films and shows around it. Having a global pandemic was surely going to mess things up for the well-oiled machine that was Disney's MCU. Phase One, Phase Two, Phase Three and the Infinity Saga was concluded with a big nice bow around it. We were told of another villain, Kang the Conquerer and how he would be the big bad of the Multiverse Saga, Phase 4, 5 and 6 and that everything would lead up to Avengers Kang Dynasty and then Avengers Secret Wars. Interestingly enough, I heard that the reason they wanted to go the Kang Dynasty route, was due to the performance of the actor, Johnathan Majors, how he wowed everyone at the end of the first season of Loki. The MCU found their guy and found their story arc. Johnathan played Kang the Conquerer in Ant-Man Quatumania and it was going to be a wonder, how he would factor into the second season of Loki due to the events of the first season.

After the events of the first season, things have now changed, like He Who Remains said it would. He Who Remains is now dead, Sylvie is gone and Loki remains at the Time Varients Authority, but things are different this time around. Instead of the Time Keepers, we now have statues and iconography of He Who Remains and Loki is terrified of what has been released. Loki discovers the Temporal Loom is collapsing and has to find a way to fix it by not only partnering up with Mobius and some of the other agents of the TVA, but also travel through time to find the only person they think could help fix the loom and stop all the other variants of He Who Remains from causing a multiversal war.

I do not want to defend Disney and the MCU, or harp on about Disney's decisions etc, but I do try to put things into perspective. Since the pandemic struck, there has been a huge push for Disney Plus and for more MCU content. Some show's release dates had to be switched around, and stories had to be changed due to the similarity of real-world events, the MCU was simply trying to find its feet due to the current global environment and the decisions and changes made. I personally feel that, with the new direction and push, a lot of the MCU's most recent content has been lacklustre (in MCU standards) due to this, but only a handful of projects have been really good and have been as close to the bar or at the bar Marvel has set for themselves. With that said, whilst the really good to great films and TV shows are very few and far between, the Loki series is by far, one of the best MCU TV shows and content the MCU has put out in a while or, frankly, period.

Loki season 2 not only seamlessly continues from the first season, the transition is simply unrecognisable. The two seasons play as one long movie and if everything was filmed at the same time and simply broken up into bite-sized episodes. The story, superb. The writing and script, incredible. The special effects were not spared and looked amazing for a TV show. To be fair, yes, the special effects were used sparingly but practical sets helped with budgets, so when the special effects were used, it looked amazing. The show seemed to have as much love and attention put into the show like the first season and a handful of other MCU TV shows. You can tell the attention to detail was there. It was all in the writing, script, story and performance.

The performance from Tom Hiddleston as Loki, will go down as one of the best story arcs in Marvel acted out by a single actor who simply owns the character. Like Robert Downey Jr. is to Ironman, Tom is to Loki. If you follow the story arc from the very first Thor, then Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, going into this series, you will love what they have done here and what the MCU has done with the Loki character. As for Jonathan Majors, the actor is incredible, simply incredible. The artistic vision he is able to put in his performance is soo good, when you simply look at his body of work and his performance in the last season, you see why they chose him. Not to get into his personal life, but should he not beat his trial, I do believe Marvel should replace the actor, but the new actor will have some huge shoes to fill. Without getting into any spoilers, seeing Johnathan continue in the MCU would be great, simply put. Ke Huy Quan, Sophia Di Martino and Owen Wilson are top tier next to Johnathan and Tom. I do feel Owen and Sophia had a slight smaller role in this season to make way for Ke and Ke knocks it out of the park. Every single moment he is on the screen, you gravitate to him and his energy. As for the other supporting cast such as Wunmi Mosaku and Rafael Casal, they were also good, but it would have been nice to have a little more from Wunmi as she is another great actress who has also worked alongside Johnathan before.

Lastly, the music by Natalie Holt is amazing. The music for the first season also by Natalie Holt is on a playlist of mine, so to know she has come back for season 2 brings comfort to me and she does not miss. I am yet to sit down and listen to this season's score, but from what I heard in the show, especially near the end of the last episode, the scene with Loki, simply sounded amazing and I will definitely Identify that and add it to my list. While the MCU is not in the best place right now, us fans want consistency, but we also want great storytelling. A vision, love, time and passion put into the writing, the stories will help the MCU going forward, this series is a testament to that as this is, as I have said, is by far, one of the best MCU TV shows and content the MCU has put out in a while or, frankly, period. Get to watching it.

(film review) - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

I would usually be quicker with the review, especially on an MCU movie, but I did not get the chance to see this movie in the cinema. Since its release, it has been a minefield trying to avoid spoilers and everything to do with the movie's villain. Compounded with what is happening with Jonathan Majors at the moment, every week there is something to be said and with his involvement in the MCU for the long haul and on a large scale, there have been certain elements/scenes of the movie that have been spoiled for me. Everyone wants to talk about things, scenes, and actors in a movie the moment it has finished and while some people will mention or try to state, "there will be no spoilers" and that their review will be a non-spoiler review, they would put up a spoiler-ry picture as the thumbnail or give it a few days before it is simply up for discussion. This is incredibly difficult to avoid and if you garnish that with the way people feel about this movie, what they ultimately thought about the experience and story, well...people do not like it. Now that is wild to me. I have waited this long getting a few things spoiled for me and for people to generally not like the movie (but liking it more than Thor Love and Thunder) only to simply watch it myself, I...well...I like it! I'll explain.

After the events of Avengers Infinity War and then Endgame, the world is still dealing with the ramifications of the event, and how people are now reacting and coping with the aftermath. Cassie, Scott Lang's daughter is all grown up and whilst Scott was away, she spent her time trying to learn and understand the quantum realm. While Janet would be the best person to ask, Janet has not been forthcoming about her experience and refuses to talk about it, until a signal is sent into the realm and they are all sucked in and have to deal with the menacing threat of who dwells there, Kang the Conqueror.

Let me get rid of the negatives first. Green screen, everywhere! Needless to say, you cannot venture to the quantum realm for practical effects and scenery, but Pandora is not a real place also and Avatar 2 looks breathtakingly real. The story is actually decent, but the execution is terrible. Maybe terrible is too harsh a word, but thinking about the plot, while great, the film does not do enough to make it seem as if it sits well narratively after the events of Endgame. The transition is not smooth at all and it seems as though there are a great deal of things retconned into this movie simply to make it work. Weird and wonderful is great, but there needed to be an explanation as to why specific groups of people look a specific way and that is not addressed. A character design and story plot point and story arc were forced into the movie which was very unnecessary and it simply looked ridiculous. While the character was cool, their motivations and the overall story seemed rushed and inadequately interjected into a movie that has a lot of things going for it. Some of the humour was simply a turn-off. Maybe I will need to watch it again, but the score did not seem to jump out at me like the second and first films did. Oh and one last thing, nanotech is simply silly now, I feel like everyone has it and I would prefer if people suited up rather than a click-click and suit!

So as for the positives. The overall story is great. The reasons why things happened the way they did, the motivations behind the actions of several of the characters and to a degree, the execution of the story was really good. Paul Rudd owns the character of Scott Lang at this point and you completely buy his relationship with his daughter and the Pym family. He is funny and for the most part, a lot of the heavy lifting is on his back and shoulders. Jonathan Majors, with the little time he has, whilst not written like Killmonger, so lacking in depth, Kang is a great villain and Jonathan absolutely kills it. Every moment he showed up, he owned the screen and the range he has in this movie is similar to a James McAvoy in Split. I would have liked a bit more depth with his character to flesh him out that little bit more, but I am assuming we will learn and know more about his character in many movies and shows to come. The action set-pieces were great and the third act was also really good to watch. What I will say, which is a slight negative though, is the trailer oversold this movie to be darker, to have more stakes and carried a tone that presented an Infinity War climax, but the film's tone is certainly not as light as the first movie, but definitely not as dark as other movies or at least what the trailer alluded to and this is where I believe Marvel dropped the ball. The interconnectivity felt loose and slightly disjointed. Also, there did not seem to be much weight to the future of these characters and their choices. For example, It was teased that Thanos was a huge threat, so when he finally appeared, you felt it. You felt his presence and the threat level due to the build-up. This movie only had a TV show as the build-up to the villain of this movie and while he owned the role, ultimately, he simply felt like a one-and-done. And imagine if you had not seen the TV series Loki? Killmonger earned his menace through great writing and execution in a single film, while Kang does not...similar to Gorr the God Butcher.

I enjoyed the movie as a whole, whilst it could have been stronger, I liked what they did, ultimately. Of recent, the MCU has not been firing off all cylinders and this, along with a few others, is proof that the MCU needs more time in the oven. Black Panther was really good, Spider-Man: No Way Home was excellent, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could have been meatier, Thor: Love and Thunder was simply a joke-fest and not as strong as Thor: Ragnorok, Black Widow, years too late and some choices made in that movie hampered it, Eternals was different, but I enjoyed it and Shang-Chi, Werewolf by Night and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are all really good. While we can accept not every movie is going to be excellent, compound this with an also "wishy-washy" TV series, phase 4 does not seem to have the momentum it needs to push the franchise forward as hard as previous phases. I have also heard people not liking phase 4 either, but I simply boil that down to two things, people's personal expectations and lazy writing/execution. We as the audience are expecting quality filming like Infinity War and/or Endgame. There has been a build-up to those movies and we are ultimately forgetting how phase 1 was for us. We did not know how things were going until Thanos was teased. I feel a lot of people are forgetting this fact and are projecting. But with that said, with over 10 years of filmmaking, a franchise that has got soo good with interlinking the stories to present something bigger over a grander story arc across many movies, the MCU is somewhat sophisticated, and while the quality has been only a little touch and go between different projects, there is reason to argue/debate, that the quality has dropped and the spectacle has raised presenting something that is lacking. Something that is only visually engaging than narratively engaging. People will complain and state superhero fatigue, but when you have other companies/intellectual properties within the same film genre doing well, you begin to wonder, it must just be lazy writing and poor execution. The end credits scenes are good, but ultimately, with a film that should carry a lot of weight and feels steady on its feet, the post-credits scenes as interesting as they were, lacks gravitas. I would definitely not place this in the top MCU trilogies (or maybe I would, Ironman, Thor [well, the trilogy part of course]), I would not say the film was terrible as I did really enjoy it, but just like Multiverse of Madness, it is the execution and the MCU needs to do better as more movies like this, that are serviceable and other movies that are just ok, they will see a decline and they have come too far to become washed up. At present, Marvel has raised their own bar soo high, they are failing (in places) to even meet the bar anymore. This could be down to Disney beind the scenes management, but hopefully, Iger is back, so maybe, just maybe, Marvel will get back on form.

(trailer review) - Creed III

 

We are nearly there with the closer to the trilogy. Three movies starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, the son of antagonist Apollo Creed from Rocky I & II. Ryan Coogler directed the first Creed movie and Steven Caple Jr. directed the second, but this third movie is Michael B. Jordan's director debut and this trailer looks a lot better than the last. Actually, let me take that back, this trailer had some juicy action shots and slow-motion I really enjoyed. Whilst the previous trailer for the movie was back in October of last year, it gave us the story and why this fight is going ahead, I feel this trailer gives us more of the emotion as to why the fight will need to go ahead.

This looks like Jonathan Majors is going to steal the show and every scene he is in. At this point, we know Adonis and his life, his wife and daughter, what he is doing and do we really care? Really? I guess to an extent we want to see how far he has come, what he is doing now and what the plan is, but it seems, the plan is to get punched in the face by his long-time friend who wants to pretty much take what he feels is owed to him. I loved a couple of the shots in this trailer and it could not just be me who noticed the little girl punching and thought of the future of the franchise going to Creed's daughter. This trailer is also nothing but chest pecs and abs, which is a demonstration of these actors' workout routines to get into real shape for this role. Let's just hope in the end, the film is just as good as those delts and traps!

(trailer review) - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

"I don't have to win, we both just have to lose". I mean, that trailer is a major step up from the last trailer as if the first trailer was just not good enough. What is Marvel doing? We cannot say, "well Phase 4 isn't good so they had to step up with this movie to get everyone back on track". People need to understand, Marvel is a very well oiled machine at this point. This movie has been completed and shot, ages ago. Marvel have hit the hard reset button after Endgame and whilst we are all thinking what and why and how, Marvel are thinking when. It is 3D chess they are playing here and if Black Panther Wakanda Forever did not show you that, this movie will.

You see, I believe Phase 4 is the introduction to many things. Laying the breadcrumbs for everything else we are about to witness in the next few phases. We are thinking about Phase 4 and 5 whilst they are outlining Phase 7, 8 and possibly 9. A lot of things do not seem to make sense right now, but it will, especially having heard that this movie is in the vain of an Avengers movie. I even said as much in my last trailer review "This trailer looks great. Although labelled the 'official trailer', that second trailer is going to hit different and I am pretty sure, it is going to be the one that pulls you in". "However, I do not believe this trailer does enough to pull us in yet, to confirm to us, this is a must see." And what is this trailer doing to you right now?

This trailer is great! I am even under the impression that Scott may not even make it out. I am also under the impression, Kang will not make it out, but in the trailer, it says "witness the beginning of a new Legacy" and if you are not aware, the next avengers movie is called Kang Legacy. I am telling you, this movie will be the catalyst that will bring fourth the future and the past and make it all make sense. I mean, even M.O.D.O.K looks great! M.O.D.O.K in live action...great! The future is bright and the future is here and Kang, he is going to be a problem. Let's just hope Johnathan Majors has signed a 9 picture deal, as I need to see more of this guy. Menacing! Oh...and the MUSIC!!!

(trailer review) - Creed III

I will start off with the possible negativity surrounding this movie. A few months ago, it was said that Frank Stallone (Sylvester's brother) made a comment on the socials stating that Michael B. Jordan pushed his brother out of the making of Creed III and Sylvester liked the post. Now, if you did not realise, the director of Creed was the director of Black Panther and the upcoming sequel coming next month. The director of Creed II, is the director of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, also coming soon, next year. I'm guessing, before the franchise of Creed became stale, the studio wanted to go forward with a sequel, but these two directors were incredibly busy. Michael B. Jordan has wanted to don his directors hat and this is his first directing job having been a producer on the last few projects he has been involved with. Unless, MBJ wrote the story or played a part in the direction of the story, I will guess MBJ did not push Stallone out, but I guess there could be some bitterness between both actors turn directors due to Rocky being Stallone's baby after all. Maybe a discussion should have been had, maybe we will find out later it was a misunderstanding.

With all that aside, this film looks incredible. The story looks great. An old friend who Adonis used to run with seems to be bitter, upset, angry or all of the above and then some, and wants what he feel is owed to him. The life that Adonis has, getting into boxing, getting into fights and winning them becoming famous and living with his wife and child, Damian wants that, something he feels he was robbed of and it looks like he is seeking revenge whilst Adonis feels responsible, like he owes Damian. A storyline many know too well. Someone will feel like the world owes them whilst the other will feel somewhat responsible and guilty, like survivor's guilt, maybe. This looks like a great entry into directing by MIchael B. Jordan. Some of the shots look superb and I am definitely a fan of Jonathan Majors of late, since the series Lovecraft Country. And whilst he was chewing up the scene in the series Loki, it definitely looks like this role will be emotional and strong delivering a phenomenal experience with this movie...well, we hope. We will see.

(trailer review) - The Harder They Fall

I did say in my last review that the trailer for this film is superb, but damn...this one is just that much better.  It's Black History Month here in the UK and I feel Netflix could have done us a Solid by dropping this a touch early because 3rd November 2021 is a long wait.

While it is nice to see an all-star black cast like this, the visuals, the music, everything just looks stunning! It looks like Jonathan Major's character is after Idris Elba and his gang who broke him out of prison for whatever reasons, maybe he is a sherif of that town or maybe there is a personal vendetta, but having this story played out, where if I'm not mistaken is actually based on or loosely based on true events, will be a sight to behold.

As  said in my last review, 'I cannot wait to see this and learn more about these people in history as in most film and westerns, you don't ever really see black people as they are usually far and few, so it is nice to have some representation', but having looked on wikipedia (which might not be the best for information at times), the gang was multicultural , so the liberties the director has taken with this, I'm not sure I am fully with because it then doesn't help with explaining or showing the motives of the non-black characters/people and why they were a part of the gang.  But as long as the film is as great as the trailer, then we should be cool!

(trailer review) - The Harder They Fall

It's nice to see an all-star black cast like this.  I would say it doesn't happen often, but I guess it does.  Tyler Perry movies and such but although I'm not saying his movies are not quality, look at the cast! Look at the trailer! I mean, it's Regina King, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, LaKeith Stanfield AND Delroy Lindo! Could this cast get any greater?

This trailer looks superb and was giving me a Tarantino feel (just a little) and the vibes of Dolemite Is My Name, and with the angles, the shots, everything about it was giving me a comic book feel, but as a western and with historical black folks from that era.  The incorporation of the music, one I know very very VERY well and black people of around my age, especially in London would definitely know this tune too; linked to the scenes and shots, like the gun firing or the turning of the wheels on the train in tune with the music, excellent.  I cannot wait to see this and learn more about these people in history as in most film and westerns, you don't ever really see black people as they are usually far and few, so it is nice to have some representation.  Another trailer would be excellent.

(series review) - Lovecraft Country

I heard about this show and I don't know what I was doing/watching at the time (many things I'm sure), but for some reason I got onto this show well late and spent a couple days binge watching to catch up.  The show started in August and I'm sure I got into it mid-late September after I kept hearing how good it was.  And were the stories true? Yes and definitely YES!!!

You see, this show is about a man named Atticus Freeman, a Korean war veteran who arrives in Chicago to see his family.  He is given a letter which is from his missing father asking him to travel across Jim Crow America to find out about his heritage.  Upon this journey, as well as trying to avoid racist attacks from white America, Atticus, his uncle George and George's friend Letitia, set on a road trip that leads them to hidden societies, family secrets, monsters and legacy that will change Atticus' life forever.  In the mix of all of this, Atticus's Aunt Hippolyta and Leti's older sister Ruby also end up having their own adventure and self discovery among other things that eventually leads into Atticus' future.

As the show goes on (without going into too much spoilers), the show weaves in a lot of real life issues and events in society which happened in the Jim Crow era of America.  Touching on the Tulsa Race Massacre, the death of Emmett Till.  They also weave in real life people such as entertainer Josephine Baker and the Dahomey Amazon.  But although they weave in these historical events which are very heavy handed emotionally at times, there are some real lighthearted moments that bring fun and joy to the season.  It's amazing to see the resilience of Black people at this time and how they still get on with life despite everything which is going on.

The show developed by Misha Green is 10 episodes at around an hour long each and soo much things are placed into every show with soo much information that flows at a rapid pace.  It doesn't necessarily feel rushed, there is soo much to unpack so you do need to pay attention as Lovecraft is definitely not a background show.  Every episode has something to say and a message that relates to the here and now.  I really felt for a specific character in this show which was acted out soo well.  But the general theme with the character and the character's story-arch, is generational and is definitely something that continues in our world today. 

The show is also based on the Lovecraft novel and takes advantages and liberties where necessary to keep the mystery of specific characters and some of the story plot, but for the most part, it does follow the novel.  How the first episode starts shows an Atticus walking through trenches in the war and the longer he walks, the more things you start to see and it get's crazier and crazier.  The first 5 minutes of this show is a snippet of how insane the show will get.

This show isn't necessarily for all ages and all types of viewers though.  It is very important for both white and black people to watch.  Not only does it shine a light on the Jim Crow era, racial tension and how white people treated non-white people, especially black people at this time, but maybe it is something we can all learn from as I stated earlier, every episode has some type of message.  Umbrella Academy touched on 1963 America and the Watchmen TV series touched on the Tulsa Race Massacre and if it wasn't for these shows shining the light on this time in history, I personally along with many many others would have never known about these events as they are not taught in school.

I say the show isn't necessarily for all ages due to the horror themes as well as the gore and other frightening imagery you will see.  But I'd say, if you can, try your best to stomach it and push through because the show is excellent.  Very well acted from ALL cast members.  Music was superb and the costume department didn't miss a beat.  The special effect were really good for the TV show and I'd only hope, now that its is done, possibly the team behind this can get a second season out, JUST as good as this season.  A lot of people will really appreciate it.

(film review) [STREAMING] - Da 5 Bloods

I think I vaguely remember hearing about Spike Lee doing a film based on Soldiers from the Vietnam War.  But I never heard much else about it until this movie dropped on Netflix.  Now in the midst of a pandemic, people have initially thought that if a film with great actors and a great director, then the reason the film is released on a streaming platform is because either, the film studio behind it didn't like the way it turned out so they sold it onto the streaming service, or the director who was pitching then idea, no studio wanted to buy it so a streaming service stepped in in distribute.  People would have thought that the film would be shoddy or not worth watching, even if it was from a director like Spike Lee.  The general consensus is that, streaming platforms do not have the budget or quality as main studios such as a Disney, Universal and such.  Besides, Spike has had some misses, you know, like most great directors, but this film...THIS film, that was produced by 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks (Spike Lee's film production company) was distributed by Netflix and to say that THIS film was shoddy, lacking, or anything negative as to why it was shown on Netflix would be a grave misstep in judgement. This film was amazing.

Da 5 Bloods centres around the friendship of five Vietnam soldiers and their time in the war when they find some gold and decide to bury it.  However, on their return to Vietnam to look for said gold, war secrets become to unfold and be told as not all friends made it back from the war as some of them have still been at war and never left, so the return puts a strain on their friendship as memories off the fallen, choices and the regrets come flooding back to haunt them.

I can't say any more due to spoilers, but I will definitely say this, having just rewatched the trailer, the trailer gives NOTHING away and what you get in the film is nothing short of acting gold.  The music, the cinematography, the aspect ratio, everything is fine-tuned and done in such a way, the film is enigmatic and engaging.  Let me touch on the acting first.  Whilst I couldn't care less about some of the characters in this movie because it wasn't really about them and they played their part in the movie well, they served their purpose, the three main actors are Delroy Lindo, Chadwick Boseman and Jonathon Majors.  Whilst Jonathon was great, it was Delroy who was acting circles around everyone bar one person.  Seasoned actor, Delroy, British born, I remember him from possibly one of the first films I ever first saw him in, also directed by Spike Lee, Crooklyn with Alfie Woodard, a film that made me cry, he commanded every scene.  You felt what he was going through and you could physically see the weight he has carried over the many years.  I guess that's a slight spoiler but I couldn't really think of a way to address his acting without talking about how he made you feel and how his character is portrayed.  Chadwick Boseman...if you didn't think he was that great of an actor and his most notable performance is Black Panther, then you are dead wrong.  Known for playing James Brown, Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall, all in which he played these real life people, Chadwick legit stole every scene in this movie.  When I said "it was Delroy who was acting circles around everyone bar one person" this one person was Chadwick.  His performance is soo good, there is a scene between the two of them and I'm pretty sure I welled up in tears.  Such a powerful performance between the two of them in this movie, if one of them doesn't get a Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor nomination AND WIN (especially considering what has come out this year), this would definitely be a snub.  These guys are soo soo good.
Jonathan Majors, whilst I don't really know him for much, his performance was good, but there was already very high bars to meet.
It was nice to see Clarke Peters as I initially remember him from the MCU Netflix 'Jessica Jones' series and before that, 'Person of Interest' and possibly 'The Wire', but although he was very good, the film did a good job with having him balance and steady the movie out.  The voice of reason in a way.

The music and cinematography is phenomenal and it goes without saying, Spike knew the music he wanted as much as he knew the angles he wanted.  Everything is soo well crafted, this war drama never felt more enriched and entertaining.  This war drama never felt like it was beating you over the head about the war, but more the casualties of war, because War, regardless of what it is for, is a terrible thing to go through and endure.  The different aspect-ratios used highlighted the different places in time we were watching, the war, the modern day, etc and whilst at first, it threw me, I got used to it fairly quickly.  Spike Lee manages to director a film that encapsulates what is happening now in real life and in some places where it is somewhat political, it is very relevant to the now.

I had a great time with this movie and it took me a little longer to write this review due to the current times we are in now, but this movie has a message, I just hope that when you watch it, you are able to pick that up.
