(series review) [STREAMING] - Lanterns - Episode 7

The penultimate episode is upon us, and if modern TV history has taught us anything, this is where the major action and drama is. Shows used to save all the fireworks for a season finale cliffhanger, but post-Game of Thrones, episode nine (or its equivalent) is usually where the entire season’s gunpowder gets detonated, leaving the finale to deal with the fallout.

Up to this point, the series has been methodically dropping breadcrumbs—who the Manhunter actually is, who killed Hal Jordan, and who we can’t trust for a second. But beneath all the sci-fi mystery, the show has quietly been exploring family dynamics: how we’re raised, what shapes us, and the baggage we refuse to drop as adults. This episode tackles those themes head-on, all while keeping the central mystery of Hal’s killer firmly under wraps.

We open with a flashback: a young Hal Jordan sitting with his baseball coach, waiting on his dad. The fallout from that meeting leads to Hal’s father dropping some heavy wisdom on the importance of letting go. Cut to the present, where the "Hal-ogram" stands over  Hal (with an amazing transition shot). After a quick sync with John—who makes it clear he’s still single-mindedly focused on solving this case—the duo team up to crack the mystery. The catch? They’re running on a strictly limited ring battery, slapping a brutally tight "ticking clock" (yes, another one) onto the entire whodunit.
