(series review) - Ironheart

 

To be clear, Disney-Marvel has made some questionable decisions lately. When I say of late, within the last six years. For me, it stemmed from a scene in Endgame (so obviously longer than six years), but there was a moment when all the women came together to fight. It had nothing to do with women coming together to fight, but more about the heavy-handedness of it all that even the show 'The Boys' made fun of it. With that said, it is all about directives and execution. Ryan Coogler had directives for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and under the circumstances, his execution was near flawless, considering the challenges he faced. Bringing a character like Riri into the MCU is obviously something they wanted to do, a black girl with intellect on par with Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and Shuri, so in Wakanda Forever, she goes. It was not an excellent fit, but Ryan made it work the best way he could. Riri was a decent addition to the movie, but was ultimately not needed; it drove the plot along. So here is the series, something they mentioned many years ago, which was in production and finished many years ago too. Under the mandate of Bob Chapek, formet Disney CEO who wanted everything out quick and fast and also onto Disney Plus, this show was struck with issues like a few movies and other shows of thay era, but the show...well, whilst not amazing or great, I still had a great time with it.

The first episode sets us up with what this story is going to be about: Riri dealing with her lost best friend and trying to find a different type of hustle to raise money to build an Iron suit. She finds a group of "Robin Hood-esque" people led by The Hood, aka Parker, where she feels she will be able to get money fast.

The second episode introduces Riri's AI N.A.T.A.L.I.E, who looks just like her best friend. While they both try to figure out how the AI came into being, Riri wants to complete a couple of missions for The Hood and his gang, but Riri needs more components for her suit when the 1st mission is complete. Riri also tries to figure out how The Hood uses his powers or where they derive from.

The third episode introduces Joe, a guy who has been living under the tech radar with his own dreams of being a revolutionist, but wants to stay as far from his father's endeavours as possible. He helps Riri, and Riri can continue with the heist, but things go wrong when the lab starts to lock down.

The fourth episode leaves Joe in a situation where The Hood helps him out and offers him assistance with his tech. Riri seeks help from her mother and her mother's friend at a magic shop that realises the nature or origin of The Hood's powers are rooted somewhere unfathomable. Xavier, Natalie's brother and Riri's friend, is forced to confront Riri's AI.

In the fifth episode, The Hood's gang decide to leave Parker to go on the last heist alone. Angry, Parker brings Zeke along with him, and Riri decides to armour up against The Hood to fight magic with magic.

The sixth and final episode gives us the origin story of The Hood and the deal he made to become who he is. Riri and The Hood battle it out, but ultimately, neither of them becomes the victor.

In short, the show was entertaining. It had its shortcomings with some of the story beats, the pacing, some logistics and The Hood's crew, but other than that, I really enjoyed the show.

Riri is a great but flawed character. She is acted very well by Dominique Thorne, and she is very relatable, other than the fact that she can build iron suits and is super intelligent. She is someone who, like most of us, runs away from things they do not want to face head-on. She makes silly decisions, but ultimately, she is a good person. Seeing Riri have panic attacks due to her realisation and the weight of her actions is very real and relatable. The N.A.T.A.L.I.E AI played by Lyric Ross, for me, steals the show. With so much personality and youthfulness, the AI is different to ALL other AIs in the MCU and stands apart by being just as clever as Riri but also acts as Riri's best friend. Their interaction and chemistry are undeniable.

Parker, aka The Hood, played by Anthony Ramos, is not one-dimensional. When we get to the latter episodes, you see where he has come from and why he is the way he is. He is not necessarily a bad person, as he also has layers like Riri, but is easily manipulated due to his drive and goals. His cousin John, played by Manny Montana, is loyal and faithful to Parker. You could see him as the person pulling the strings because he has a quiet demeanour about him, and he isn't just a henchman. He looks out for his cousin and protects him no matter what. All these characters and the acting from the actors are great, with zero flaws.

The Hood's crew. They are just in the show to act as Parker's henchmen to do what he asks them to do and to help pull off the heists. It is possible Parker could pull the heists off by himself, but he also wants his friends to earn money. None of these characters really stand out, nor do you care about them. You might want to know the backgrounds of maybe 2 of them. But ultimately, they are in this show to help build it out and flesh out the world. They are not important, even if one of them does mention a place we have heard before a few times in the MCU. Another character who was great was Joe. The chemistry between Dominique and Alden works well! His character is great, and he plays the character great, but going forward, it would be great to see more of Joe.

The mother, mother's friend and daughter are side characters I wish I got more screen time with and found out a bit more about them. Even the dad was great. Maybe after Doctor Strange 3, we might get something that has been mentioned (rumored) and an interesting and different Marvel show rather than film is defintely the way forward here, and maybe it can open up to a lot of possibilities epecially with fleshing out the MCU even more, but they were great side characters.

The show, as stated earlier, was entertaining, and it did act more like a show than a film spliced into six, but with that said, the show felt a little rushed to me. There seemed to be no sense of time passing, so the show feels like it spans a week, if that, rather than maybe two weeks or a month. Maybe it does or maybe it is shorter, but it seems like a lot gets done within hours from when the show starts to when it ends.

The music is great, and the special effects for a TV Show are great. The Iron suit looks great on screen, and it really pops. A lot of money has gone into it, and it shows.  It is a very high film quality, and the Iron suits look amazing, especially as they are all different from one another.

Although this show is likely to get mixed reviews over a myriad of reasons, ultimately the show is heading places that require a season 2 or the story to continue elsewhere. How the show ends is very ballsy for Disney and is all in line with the character. It had been a while since we had seen a flawed character like Riri, and this type of storytelling needs to continue within the MCU. If you have not seen it, give it a watch; it is not that demanding of your time, and it is entertaining. Hopefully, we can see more of these great side characters to open the doors for something else. Considering this show was delayed and chopped and re-written and this and that, the end result was not terrible, and for those who think it was, maybe consider Secret Invasion, or Echo or She-Hulk or Hawkeye or Moon Knight! I enjoyed Echo. She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Hawkeye were ok, but I do believe people are quick to say something is trash, forgetting other shows they called trash that came before it. It is not top quality and needs a bit of work here and there, but we have a good show with a great character and supporting characters, with an ending that needs resolving 

(trailer review) - Ironheart

There is a very high possibility that this show is going to be trash. I say that because you have to read between the lines and take in all the information you know about the delays, the reshoots, the 4 or 5 years it has taken to get this official trailer out to us, that the MCU has been struggling in the past two phases because the content has been hit and miss due to the corpoerate running of Disney and their change of leadership and mandates. This show was given life when Bob Chapek wanted shows and movies, now now now! I cannot say that I have hope for this due to knowing all this information and feeling some concerns over the handling of the property, which could very well lead to the poor execution of this show, having it been rushed out but, with that said, this trailer has definitely sold it for me. I would not say I am excited and I cannot wait, but I will say, "consider my interest piqued".

Straight off as an introduction or reintroduction (for those who did not watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), they show us how book and street smart Riri is, but as we go further into the trailer we see a few snippets of Riri's time in Wakanda as she states she wants to make something iconic. I am guessing that with trying to fulfil her dreams, she needs money, something she does not have, and she leans on and  "befriends" a person who states he can get her money, and is likely the Bad Guy of the show, her benefactor, maybe mentor too. I am not sure where the show will be going because there has been a lot of things that has changed over the years since, 'Armour Wars' being one of them, so I am ultimately wondering, if this is simply a standalone show telling her story of how she has continued since the Black Panther sequel? I mean, displaying her intellect and her skillset is one thing, and it is cool, we saw that, but if the show does not really connect to the larger MCU in some way, why do we want to watch it? I love the fact that she has created an AI that looks lifelike (Maybe a way we can get RDJ back like as an AI construct like in the comics), and if the rumours are true, the guy at the end, if he turns out to be who he has been rumoured to be, it will be really interesting to see where they take that character. The show looks great, magic and technology, but looks can be deceiving. I legit feel that at the moment, Marvel is currently operating on a "we win one, we lose one, we win one, we lose one, we..." distribution structure with their projects, film and TV, until they are fully back on track with quality, but I cannot help to think, unless the armour she creates helps Doctor Doom in some way, why? I'd be surprised if this turns out half decent, but I would definitely want it to be fully decent, and I hope it is.

(film review) - Sinners

There has been some talk about Ryan Coogler spending 90-100 million dollars on this movie, and having made 48 million dollars domestically and approximately 15 million dollars internationally on the opening weekend, it has been seen by local trades as "not enough" as it is not profitable and the movie will need to do much more to make that money back. Please remember that this movie is of a specific genre (no spoilers here), and unlike 'Once Upon A Time' by Quentin Tarantino, which made 41 million dollars on its opening weekend and was praised. What is the reason for this? Even Ben Stiller came out to defend this original film from the backlash and negative reports. This is a predominantly black cast, original movie within a specific genre released during a cost of living crisis and within an era where comicbook movies are booming, this movie should be seen as an absolute win for Ryan and his team because not only did he write, direct and produced a movie that did not revamp the art of storytelling or do anything that was extremely ground-breaking, this movie cuts into the layers of history, black history touching on lore, religion, music, escapism and the vamperic nature of people who want under the guise of sharing such as cultural appropriation. It has been mentioned that Marvel approached Ryan to direct the Blade movie they have been having trouble putting together, and he told them he was doing this movie. I am glad he stuck to his guns because this is a great movie. I'll explain. 

After World War I, Smoke & Stack are two notorious twins who arrive back in town after a stint in Chicago, rumoured to be working with Italian Mobsters. With the money they have, their plan is to open a Juke Joint to allow people around the town a place to go for entertainment and fun, but on the day of the grand opening, a few white people arrive who want to enter their establishment and end up causing a major problem for Smoke, Stack and the revellers inside.

I will start off with a few negatives, which are very nitpicky of me. I believe the trailers could have done a better job of showing some of the smaller scenes and other scenes without giving the movie away. They did a great job, but there is a montage at the end of the movie that would have been nice to have included to further throw off the twist, but to further the "something is going on" feel the trailer had. Hearing about the genre of this movie is a spoiler, although I understand why it is needed in some cases, having people talk about it leads you to expect and wait for it, which allows you to preempt moments, scenes and scenarios rather than simply enjoy the movie as it is. I mean, we are going to get there soon, so why spoil it for others? But other than that, this movie is great. Ryan Coogler has directed 5 films, and he is 5 for 5. He is following in the steps of Christopher Nolan and a few others who have not missed.

The story of two notorious twins trying to set up shop in their home town during the Jim Crow era, only for it to be disrupted by white people at a time when the Ku Klux Klan was attacking black people, is an interesting era to have this movie take place. Ryan weaves in religion, witchcraft and lore which includes the word 'Haints', something I heard whilst playing 'South of Midnight', having not known what a haint was before playing and to have it brought up here, a few weeks since 'South of Midnight' was released is a great continuation of folk-lore and history within the black community. With that said, the intertwining of religion and music in a period where secular music was referred to as the devil's music created an uneasy backdrop and soundtrack to the movie. It emphasised the power of music through generations, where it came from to where it is going, the talented people who produced/played music in those times of struggle as music is a form of escapism as well as a tool to create unity between people, which ironically leads to the main antagonist wanting to have, join and be with the people who are enjoying themselves for their own sinister gain under the guise of family and unity, through music.
There is a super deep cut moment for people who have watched the 'House Party' movies (specifically House Party 1), and there is a chant saying, "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don't need no water let that motherf*cker burn" in that movie, which played in my head in this movies as there was a moment of symbolism of people having a great time in a party until the roof caught into flames.

The music, once again provided by Ludwig Göransson is that one-two punch Ryan and Ludwig provide in the films he directs and the other creates music for. These are two collaborators who work well together, just like how Ryan and Michael work well together. There is a specific scene in the movie where the music seems to transcend time, and it was amazing. The music is a character in this movie and plays a heavy, huge and important part, becoming part of the storyline itself.

The casting here is top-notch. Thinking about it now, although this movie is a majority black cast, we have white, native indian and east asian characters, other people of colour, which was interesting and refreshing to see. But moreover, that one-two punch we get with Michael and Ryan directing him is great. Although you are aware that Michael is playing two characters and often in the same frame, there is a distinct difference between the twins. I noticed immediately which twin was the more aggressive and which one was the calmer of the identical twins, which was also interesting as not only do they love and look out for one another and share an inseparable bond, they would also distance themselves when they feel they are in a scenario they perceive as threatening. Michael provides mannerisms and characteristics that make the twins look and feel different from one another. Another standout in this movie came from a new actor named Miles Caton as Sammie, who, in his first movie, THIS MOVIE, was phenomenal. The acting and singing performed by him has catapulted him into stardom. It will not take long for Hollywood to grab him and place him into something else very soon, and the same goes for Jayme Lawson, who was equally as good. I do not recognise her from 'The Woman King' and 'The Batman', so I will rewatch those, but she did a great job convincing me that she is also a young, up-and-coming acting force. Lastly, the other two actors who stole the show and their respective scenes, Delroy Lindo and Jack O'Connell. It is quite possible that I kept these two last, wait, Wunmi Mosaku, these THREE last, because they are British, and these three also carried the movie for me. Delroy as Slim, the old wise man who has lived through and seen a lot to share his experiences,  Jack O'Connell as Remmick, the white man who wants to take something from another but dresses up his needs and his own motives under charm and persuasive tactics in the guise of unity and family and Wunmi as Annie, who provides the knowledge, exposition and heart with an heartbreaking storyline that I found quite touching. To mention Hailee Steinfeld at this point makes it seem as though she was not great, but she is great in everything she is in, from 'Hawkeye' to 'Bumblebee' and the voice acting she does in the animated 'Spider-Man' movies as Gwen Stacy.

One last thing, the costume design and the visuals are stunning. Ryan Coogler with his 'one take' shots that are now usually referred to as 'oners', long takes without a camera cut, panning from one moment or angle in a scene to another. The party scene was great for that, as it all felt seamless and rhythmic, flowing with the music. Needless to say, the shots, pictures, and imagery is stunning. The costume design is also excellent, with Ruth E. Carter's attention to detail. All the characters have a great look to them, with both Smoke and Stack dressing similarly but also very differently at the same time.

This is a solid cast for a small movie where they were all stealing scenes from one another like a 'free-for-all', and the twists and turns this movie makes are enough to have you stay until the very end and see the mid-credits scene, which can set up for a sequel. Although I'd be happy to leave this movie as it is, I can imagine a prequel with Smoke and Stack going through World War I, coming home to leave and go to Chicago to work with crime families there to finally get the money they need to lead us into this new film. I'd love to see the dynamics and storyline there, especially as the prequel could be set up as a completely different genre, and if they do a sequel ot this, maybe that could be another genre setting this franchise up as a franchise with three different genres. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and it deserves all the accolades it gets.

(film review) - Judas and the Black Messiah

This guy can do no wrong!  To whom do I speak of?  Ryan? Lakeith? Daniel? At this rate, it is a matter of rephrasing that sentence to, these guys can do no wrong!  Although Ryan Coogler was not the director and he has been the director of such great, great movies like, Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther and these are the ONLY 3 movies he has directed, Ryan was the producer of this movie so he helped to make it happen.  For only directing 3 short films then 3 major full-length films which have catapulted Ryan into the stratosphere to be approached and to sign a 5 year deal with Disney, speaks volumes even the deaf can hear.  3 for 3? Ryan is Talented!
Lakeith, such a talented actor! First noted to me by his role in the film 'Get Out' ALSO starring Daniel Kaluuya, such a well written movie, well acted movie and not only did it put Lakeith more on the map, but also gave him more opportunities to act in more roles as this guy IS simply great at his job.  Unfortunately where I hadn't seen Selma, Straight Outta Compton (although I heard 'the guy playing Snoop Doggy Dog is great'), his role in Purge: Anarchy didn't stick with me, but then again, nor did the film, but his role in Knives Out was great. Among an all-star cast, Lakeith held is own and well.
Daniel! Daniel stuck out to me from a TV series called Black Mirror.  His role in that show felt weird, but he was soo so good.  I recognised him as Black Death in Kick-Ass 2 but it was his work on 'Get Out' that people were asking who this guy was.  Daniel has been in great film after great film after great film.  Sicario, Black Panther, Widows (although not so great but he was great in it), Queen and Slim and now this, Daniel is becoming a household name securing his spot in Black Hollywood.  I'm guessing having said that, it goes without saying, this movie is a great watch...yes, of course it is!

Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) was a real life person who was the Chairman of the Chicago Black Panther Party.  In 1969, Fred Hampton was killed in his sleep in a secret Police raid in which a former head of security personnel for Fred, William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), worked as an infiltrator and informant to FBI agent Roy Martin Mitchell.  This film is a biographical Drama of the last 3 years before Fred Hampton's Murder at the age of 21.
This movie explores the role of Fred Hampton in the Black Panther Party, his beliefs, his ideologies and what he wanted to do.  This film also explores the role of William O'Neal and his infiltration into the party, how he gained trust and ultimately had Fred Hampton killed.

As long as I have been alive, the Black Panther Party has ALWAYS been shown as a black militia.  My understanding has always been from what I had seen in pictures, videos and in film.  Black men and women standing in formation brandishing entirely black clothing with black berets and holding guns.  It was understood that the police did not like them and that they often caused trouble for the police.  I understood they were a type of group of people, a political party who were for black people fighting against the injustices of black people in those hard times, but I was never taught in school about what they did, how they did it or why.  Even if you wiki the Black Panther Party, it will tell you that they were Anti-fascism, Anti-imperialism, Anti-racism, Anti-capitalism and for African-American leftism, Black nationalism, Revolutionary socialism, Black pride & Gun rights (the last obviously for defence of self).

The acting is superb by both Lakeith and Daniel whilst Dominique Fishback supporting helped to ground the movie showing us the dynamics of life in that era, the politics and the love, passion and also the unselfish spirit of whom Fred was.  A scene seen in the trailer, Fred is giving a speech, and while he is giving this speech as powerful as it is, Dominique sheds a tear as you fully understand as to why she is caught up in her feelings.  Fred was a man for the people essentially by the people.  If you are able to read between the lines, Roy (Jesse Plemons), along with William were simply puppets to a bigger agenda.  Whilst one was simply doing his job, the other was doing for self.  The film also highlights the callous behaviours of J.Edgar Hoover and the FBI at this time.

This film is heavy emotionally, but manages to ease the weight of digestion with the narrative, dialogue and performances.  The performances were outstanding.  I found myself often saying over and over in my head and sometimes out aloud about Daniel's performance, 'He's soo good'.  They manage to get the point across without hitting you over the head with it, so well done Shaka King for the excellent Directing.  By the end of the movie, you will understand that not all members of the Black Panther Party were militant and there were other factions out there of whom were or seemed a lot worse.

Writing this review was difficult for me because, being black and having not lived in that era but understanding the ordeals black people had to go through at that time AND because black people are still suffering to this very day in 2021, it hurts my soul.  Granted, back then could be deemed more extreme, but I'm sure there is an argument to be made.  During a pandemic in 2020, Black and non-black people alike came together to support one another on Police Brutality, on George Floyd who was killed on camera in front of people in the street like a dog.  Breonna Taylor who was killed at her home in her sleep.  Soo much injustice and to think that Black people, even having endured all they have endured across generations, whilst nothing can be said about jews and anti-semitism, at least they can come together as a community for their people, Fred and countless others have tried and tried to band us together, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King just to name a few, but just like Fred, they are killed.  It's just upsetting.  The film doesn't weigh you down like I probably have, so go watch it, it's a great film!

(trailer review) - Judas and the Black Messiah

I swear this has to be one of the most humble guys I've seen in acting who is just AMAZING at his craft.  Not to say that other actors are not amazing and/or humble, but I really do feel that Daniel brings a different kind of energy to his craftsmanship.
He was in Kick Ass 2, he was in a Black Mirror Episode, starred in Get Out WITH Lakeith Stanfield, in Black Panther DIRECTED by Ryan Coogler (who also produces this movie) and also in Queen and Slim, a film that made me cry and angry and his performance was also great in that.  he has been in other movies i haven't mentioned, but this trailer alone looks Award winning for this award nominated actor.

There's nothing much I can say in regards to this trailer as the trailer speaks volumes loud and clear, unless there will be some twists involved.  Fred Hampton is set up by close ally and/or friend due to his co-operation with the police who are trying to take Fred down.  I don't know the real life story along with countless others, so I'm totally unaware of how the story is meant to have gone but I'm sure it would be great to learn this story directed by Shaka King.  I've watched this trailer like 3-4 times now and it just get's more powerful with every watch.  I think, the movie being released now would be very poignant to what is happening in society right now and also brings me back to Umbrella Academy Season 2. 1963 and 1969 are only 6 years apart.

(film review) - Black Panther

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was a great film.  Arguably for me, the best stand-alone movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Captain America: Civil War, was a great film.  My opinion on the Russo Brothers second movie with Captain America comes in as a tie for me with it's predecessor.  I just don't think it passes TWS, BUT it does do a great job in introducing the Black Panther character flawlessly to steamroll right through this movie.  You got to see this character, his values, how he presents himself, part of his story AND a glimpse of his country.  As soon as he arrives, it's absolutely no nonsense and you immediately loved the character and like me, wanted to know more.  Now having his own movie, it is a wonder how this movie will go.  Directed by the young Ryan Coogler, who also directed Fruitville Station & Creed, Ryan does the most masterful job on showing us who Black Panther is and where he comes from, Wakanda.

Picking up shortly after the events of Civil War, The Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to be greeted by his mother, Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) and his Royal Guard the Dora Milaje.  Now that his father, T'Chaka (John Kani) is dead, T'Challa must now take up his Kingship and rule his nation of Wakanda as their new King.  With the emergence of a long time enemy of Wakanda Ulyesses Klaue (Andy Serkis), T'Challa must go on a mission to take down this enemy, but when the mission goes wrong on 'Day-One', this sets some uneasiness with some of the locals and also coincidentally brings forth a new foe Erik 'Killmonger' Setvens (Michael B. Jordan), who is a direct threat to T'Challa and the Throne.  T'Challa must overcome these challenges and threats to himself, his people and the throne.

This is a great and very layered film.  From the beginning of the movie until the very end after the Credits.  The Social commentary and political standpoints in this movie are very apparent, but do not beat you over the head with it.  They address current issues in real life flawlessly as well as negating stereotypes and turning them on it's head.  Very culturally aware and without coming across preachy, is able to drip feed a tiny bit of history of the real world, what has been done, what we do as people and what is likely to happen.  Baring in mind that the MCU is set in the "real world", this movie does a lot to change the narrative a little and opens you up to ideas of what could have been, could be and how things should be.

At first, when I heard and read reviews of this film, I was slightly disappointed once I had finished watching it, but then I asked myself, "what could have been done better?" I thought about this long and hard until I decided that although the film isn't perfect and should have been a little longer, ultimately I needed more from the villain.  This made me realise that, not only was the villain great, his story was also great.

The visuals are amazing.  The colours usedThe acting in this movie from everyone was excellent.  Sure some accents were not THAT great, but you understood where they were going with it and what was being said.  The costumes and outfits were amazing and very well realised and detailed.  Pulling a lot of real life culture into this movies and you could see it.  I've not read a Black Panther comic book, BUT the imagery looked as though it was taken directly from the comics.  The fights scenes although, not a lot, were all pretty good.  The mission fight was just excellent in every way and the use of the camera and the angles were great.  The last fight scene was not THAT great, a little CGI heavy, but they were awful and did not take away from the story.  I do believe that Marvel did a better job in giving us what they have done for a few films now, with their bad guy.  Mentioning the bad guy; excellent.  You understood his motives and although sometimes you just want to hate the bad guy and he must be defeated, he makes you feel sympathetic to his cause.  The film is VERY funny in places, may actually make you cry and I walked away from the film ranting and raving about the character M'Baku (Winston Duke).  People will have their favourites but he was mine.

A lot of people may want different things from this movie due to it being a comic book/superhero movie, but this movie is much bigger than that.  The fact that it didn't really feel like a superhero and it feeling different, but still feeling the same was an achievement which walks the same line as The Winter Soldier for me.  A stand-alone movie that raises the bar and connects to the larger MCU story-arc and will definitely get you excited for Infinity War.  Go watch it...you may even watch it more than once because it is THAT entertaining.
